For others it involves the ultimate sacrifice – one’s own life. This year we are celebrating the 15th anniversary of Sister Dorothy Stang who gave her life to safeguard the land of the impoverished of Brazil.

In recent years the landscaping around the front of EarthConnection (EC) has consisted of those native wild flower plants we planted, e.g., Purple Cone Flower, Black-eyed Susan, Daylilies, Bee Balm, and Wild Bergamot. Then there are the ones who planted themselves, for example, New England Aster, Common Milkweed, Common Yarrow, Wild Lettuce, Dandelion, Common Chicory, Red Clover and White Clover, Queen Anne’s Lace, and Canada thistle.

The challenge for us today is to recognize, as Pope Francis tells us multiple times in Laudato Si’, that everything is connected. Nothing in the universe is extraneous, nothing is inconsequential. It is all connected in a tapestry God has created and continually creates. We are part of this new story which calls us to let go of a dualistic world and embrace the Oneness God intends for all creation as we live into the new story.

The Canadian Boreal is the largest intact forest remaining on Earth, but this forest is under constant threat from industry. Every minute 7 NHL hockey rinks are clear cut for pulp. This intensive logging destroys landscapes that have sustained indigenous communities for generations and contributes to loss of habitat for many of our North American birds and species including caribou and the Canada lynx. The Boreal forest also plays a critical role in protecting our climate from carbon emissions.
